SAMBA

“A coward has no scars.” – Zimbabwean Proverb

Adaptation based on an African Folktale

Prince Samba was born a coward; whenever Samba encounters trials, he runs away, even though he’s big and strong. When marauders, the Ngize, attack his village, Samba makes an excuse for why he wasn’t leading them in battle. The villagers call him “Samba the Coward”.  Ostracized by his village for his cowardice, Samba runs in search for peace. Samba makes a new life for himself in another village, married to a princess. But when the Ngize threaten Samba’s peace, he must face his fear.

This tale shows that fear and trauma are inescapable parts of life but we should not surrender our lives to it. Offenses will come but if we are to ever find peace, inside and out, then we must be willing to face our fears.  It is only in the presence of fear that we are rewarded with the mark of bravery.
